Learning to Get Full Use Out of My Camera

In 2006 I bought my husband a Nikon D50 as a birthday present. I love the camera and we have gotten so much use out of it. B took several classes on the camera but I have yet to even understand the camera. I just use the automatic setting and click away.  I have been thinking about learning more about the camera and all the setting it has, so it was time to get my camera into the shop.

A few months ago the camera stopped working right.  Of course knowing how horrible I am at taking care of things, it wasn't an easy fix.  My normal 18-55 lens was trashed. It was dirty and had something banging around inside of it, they also couldn't even get the filter off it cause it was dinged in so many places. I know how crappy I am at taking care of stuff but this seemed like a hit in the stomach. This expensive little lens wouldn't have been broken if I had always put the camera back into its bag when I was finished or made sure to not just sit it down carelessly when between shots. So after having to buy a new lens and get my 200-400 VR lens sent in for cleaning, I realized it was time to really learn and appreciate the awesome camera that we have.

After  reading a couple photography sites and information on the web, I am first going to get a book on how to work my camera. Many sites recommended books by Scott Kelby. So I picked up a used copy of  The Digital Photography Book on Amazon. As I wait for the book to come, I am going to get the manual out and start reading it also. Many photographers suggest this is a very beneficial way to learn your specific camera.

As much as I want to take classes I think I first need to understand what my camera even has on it. So my newest journey or passion, as some would say, is getting to know and really understanding photography.  Hopefully one day I can take great pictures while exploring my family, friends and this beautiful earth we live on.

Totally kicking myself for not getting a Nikon D80 when I was looking for a new camera. I was afraid I wouldn't get the use out of it b/c I wouldn't know how to use it, it looks intimidating. Good luck, I am sure you are going to love all the cool features as you figure them out!
